Alright lads, yeah, we’re late with this one. We know. But everything glamorous comes late, right?
It’s June month, AKA Pride Month! Happy Birthday, queers! We got a pretty gay schedule of events this month, including our new exhibition, FLUID, HYLIF. But let’s start off with…
Book of the Month
(BOTM, said like botm - coincidence?)
Strangers: Essays on the Human and Nonhuman
By Rebecca Tamás
In Strangers, Rebecca Tamás explores where the human and nonhuman meet, through pain, grief, accepting the mysterious. This collection of essays establishes links between the folkloric, the political, the environment and the personal. Often transcendental, always lyrical, these essays are a psychogeographic vision between body, spirit and land. — Joshua Jones
COMING UP
We got a packed month of goodness coming up!
(creative writing workshop on the 5th has been cancelled, unfortunately, but I’ve made the graphic now, sooo)
Tuesday 13th - CCC
Cardiff Collage Club is back, baby! This month is nature themed, so come keep your hosts Sam & Rey busy, get yer hands all gluey, while making a collage zine about frogs or something idk x
Friday 16th - Creative Kindling
An evening of poetry, music and collaboration! Christina Thatcher will be performing poems from her collection, How to Carry Fire, collaborating with Steven Kenward (Small Miracles, The Warden). Christina is one of the best poets in Wales, she’s been on our Featured Poem and has performed at our open mics. She’s really fucking good, and the evening will be warmed by our very own Joshua Jones, who is simply Alright.
Saturday 17th - PrePrideParty Social
There’s nothing gays do better than wearing glitter on their face and protesting against the patriarchy. Whether you’re in party or protest mode, we got you covered. Come get ready and meet friends at our space before heading out to have fun at Pride. Time to be announced SOON, just working out the details. Keep your eyes on our socials! x x
Wednesday 21st - Open Mic + featured guests
I’m so excited to hear Adam Gnade read at this event - he’s over from the US on a UK tour giving poetry readings, with Andrew Mears (Foals/Youthmovies) in tow. Adam is as DIY as they get, lives on a farm and runs Hello America Stereo Cassette, publishing poetry on cassette tape. Andrew is a leading poet in radical uncertainty, the capacity of poetics to imagine ecological futures beyond capitalist realism, temporalities, and the entanglement of the human and non-human. They’ll be performing poetry and songs with support from everyone’s favourite Wormo!
Instead of signing up online, this month just sign up ON THE DOOR - so make sure you arrive on time to claim your space, as these are limited!!
Sunday 25th - Book Swap
Our 2nd bookswap eva! The last one went so well and was so fun, we thought we’d make it a semi-regular thing. Bring books, swap books, chat about books. Easy peasy!
Collage Club, Creative Kindling & Open Mic are up on Eventbrite. Donation entry!
Featured Poem
100 Poems to Save the Earth, published by Seren Books, invites us to fine-tune our senses and to experience the world around us while we still can. ‘Body as Cloud’ by The Cyborg Jillian Weise, just one of many fantastic poems from the anthology, deconstructs the idea of the body as divided from the rest of the world. When the world is in danger, so is the body, the spirit - the human condition as we know it.
And finally, don’t forget to check our new exhibition, FLUID, HYLIF, an exploration of queer ecology by 12 Welsh/Wales-based artists, open until June 25th!
That’s it for now but not really! There’s always something cooking, the chefs never have a day off. They’re crying over the baked bean pan again. If you’re still there, thank you for reading x
